Tony Rolfson Wins 2012 Winter League Race #6 @ Octane Raceway March 6,2012

Thirty Two indoor kart racers took to Track 2 c/c/w for the 6th race of 9 in the 2012 Winter league series at Octane Raceway. Once again the need for 3 groups kept everyone on their accelerator and off the brake as the top 3 in each group got to advance to the coveted “A” Main. Finishing 4th may or may not get you into the major points group. With eleven to start the “A” Main only the two faster of the three of the 4th place finishers get to compete in the “A” Main. If you were the slowest in time from the 4th place finishers in your Heat then you get to start from Pole position in the “B” Main. The bonus is if you win the “B” Main you advance to the “A” Main and race another 40/50 lapper and try to make your way to the front to score max points. Easier said than done! Stamina can be an issue, you start from the rear and in a kart that’s not up to temp. To date not one “B” Main advance candidate has been a top 3 finisher in the “A” Main. Reason? With racers like Chaz Baca Jr, Tony Rolfson, Austin Kipp, Kyler Repella, Mike Davila, Keith Sears, Josh Sarchet, Josh Walker, Josh Lambeth, Mike McClaran, Jason Burstein, Steve Lattanzi and many more, that’s why! Many have tried and come up just a bit short. A very regular racer that has won more than his share of “B” Mains is Scott Lodding. He somehow just misses the “A” Main cut but is always right there winning the “B” and having another shot at more points. Hmmmm, I’m beginning to think this is Scott’s way of extra track time for the same entry fee. Nice way to pile on the laps in one night of league racing.

Let’s now get to the meat and potatoes of why you are reading this engaging and riveting race wrap up report.

We start with the 5 lap Qualifier into the 25 lap Heat.

About time a different name besides Baca took the win overall. Even though they stayed glued together for most of the 40 lap race, Rolfsons error free driving style kept him in the lead and out of trouble. Congratulations Tony!

And where was Steve Lattanzi who started this race from P3? Well on lap 16 the freight train led by Kyler Repella came roaring by with Kipp/Burstein/Sarchet and Gutierrez in tow to send innocent bystander Lattanzi to 8th. Let me make this very clear, the pass by all involved was clean x 5. Lattanzi managed to claw his way back to sixth 4 laps later but lose it again and finished a very disappointing 8th for the night.

Top 10 in Overall Points going into Race #7 of 9.

Chaz Baca Jr…335

Tony Rolfson…326

Steve Lattanzi…306

Kyler Repella…293

Josh Walker…288

Mike McClaran…264

Cody Gutierrez…260

Scott Lodding…250

Josh Sarchet…248

Austin Kipp…211

As we all get closer to the end of the 2012 Winter League series at Octane Raceway and the points race stays tight between the top two players Tony Rolfson & Chaz Baca Jr all it will take is one misstep by either one to fall by the wayside and not lay claim to the FREE entry into the 2012 Grand Nationals sponsored by CalSpeed Karting Center. Let’s not forget that there is one race drop at series end which may or not change the final results. May the best indoor kart racer of Octane Raceway win!
