Chaz Baca Jr is Champion of 2012 Winter Leagues @ Octane Raceway

2012 Winter League Race Final @ Octane Raceway Sat. March 24,2012.

½ Mile GP Track c/c/w…23 Indoor Kart racers suited up and ready to do battle for bragging rights and to lay claim to millions of dollars in prize money and the solid 24k gold trophies handed out to the top 10.

There can only be one “Champion” of the Winter league series and going into the last race mathematically only two drivers are within striking distance of that ultimate goal.

Chaz Baca Jr (449) led the points race going into the Final by 11 points w/o the one race drop but Tony Rolfson (438), the 2011 AZIKC Champion, is right there ready to pounce should Chaz Baca Jr have an unusual race filled with mistakes and, or bad luck. The closest points battle was between Kyler Repella (395), Josh Walker (391) and Steve Lattanzi (382). Lattanzi fell from 3rd in the points standing to 5th after the forgetful disaster of a race in race #8 on Tuesday March 20 where he finished 29th overall. The silver lining there was with a one race drop headed his way. The points he will be dropping will be less than points dropped by Repella/Walker.

Josh Walker pulled a surprising no show so his total points will be 391 which was not be enough to hold onto 4th or propel him into 3rd overall.

Top qualifier is Tony Rolfson followed by Chaz Baca Jr… Steve Lattanzi…Mike McClaran…Kyler Repella…Cody Gutierrez…George Sklyarevsky…Johnny Pegna…Keith Sears…Scott Lodding.

Top finisher in the Heat was “Winner” Tony Rolfson who now gains 1 more point on Chaz Baca Jr who finishes 2nd, Steve Lattanzi, Kyler Repella, Mike McClaran, Cody Gutierrez, George Sklyarevsky, Josh Sarchet, Keith Sears, Charles Crowe round out the top 10. So far the plan to put Baca Jr at a bigger points deficit is not working.

We now go into the Final Main with Rolfson leading from pole position, Baca Jr parked right on his rear bumper and vowing to play it smart by staying within a spot or two of one of his toughest competitors. Meanwhile Repella needs to pass Lattanzi and hope Lattanzi gets passed by at least 4 to 5 more racers before the end of the 30 lap Main.

Final Main Top 10 Finish Order:

Tony Rolfson…Chaz Baca Jr…Kyler Repella…Steve Lattanzi…Mike McClaran…Cody Gutierrez…Keith Sears…Josh Sarchet…Charles Crowe…Phillip Schroeder.

As you can see neither breakaway plan of Tony Rolfson or Kyler Repella worked and when all said and done:

Chaz Baca Jr Wins 5 of 8 races of 2012 Winter League

2012 Winter League Race #8 of 9 @ Octane Raceway Tuesday March 20, 2012

Chaz Baca Jr has another strong finish going into the Final Winter league race on Sat. March 24. Eight races in and 5 Heat and Main wins go to Baca. Missed the podium once with a fourth place finish in Race #4. Tony Rolfson just can’t seem to break the stranglehold Baca has on winning the FREE entry into the SportKartUSA Grand Nationals at CalSpeed Karting Center June 22-24, in Fontana, CA. CalSpeed Karting put up the FREE entry prize as a way to entice more to take a shot at what will be one of the premier Sport karting events of the year. With only 125 entries being accepted I expect a sellout and fast times come June. I’m in, how about you? Don’t be Late, or You Will Have to Spectate! Not nearly as much fun as being on the track, racing against the best Sport Karting has to offer.

Thirty-two hotshoe indoor kart racers signed on the dotted line to compete in league race #8. Two brothers escaped the frozen tundra of Wisconsin to join us. Thank you Matt & Jake Solin. Heard they were in town to thaw out, enjoy spring break with family and take in a Cactus league baseball game. Heard good things about Octane Raceway and decided to stop by to give it a go. I think the high level of competition took them by surprise. Also newcomer Martin Gray took a shot at the league action and managed to stay out of trouble. Plenty of racing miles on Track 2 c/c/w and no shortage of smiles by most who came to compete against the best of the best at Octane.

I said most because there was one regular visitor to the “A” Main that had nothing but trouble staying on track and out of the Black Flag penalty zone.

First faux paux was spinning former employee and great racer Ronald Phillips into the wall on the warm up lap to the Qualifier.

Said racer qualified on pole for the Heat. All’s well but not for long. How so, you ask? With a 5 to 7 kart gap and in the lead in his Heat he comes out of the S’s way too hot and bounces off the wall and spins to the center of the track where he is now backwards to face oncoming traffic. First to fourth in the blink of an eye. Don’t know who was more shocked by this chain of events, errant driver, spectators or Ron, George or Mike who up to that moment were running 2/3/4. Gift and not even one birthday.

Now in fourth place, Spinderrella takes off after the drivers that are now between him and his first place finish in the heat. First to feel the pressure was Mike McClaran who was on the receiving end of an improper pass that invited the Black Flag to the party. Stop and go penalty but not before coming out of the pit exit into the side of innocent victim #2 John Vanderwey. Oh ,S#*t was heard right before the side pod contact. Soon enough heat race went checkered and a 9th place finish cements a “C” Main start for yours truly, Steve “Kandyman” Lattanzi. The crowd readies the pitchforks and lays down bets on his finish in the “C” Main. Very optimistic of them. To be continued…

Group 1 Q/H Top 5:

Ronald Phillips…George Sklyarevesky…Mike McClaran…Keith Sears…Don Angel

Congratulations Ronald Phillips.

Group 2 Q/H Top 5:

Chaz Baca Jr…Kyler Repella…Cody Gutierrez…Chris Wynne…Joe Landram

Group 3 Q/H Top 5:

Tony Rolfson…Josh Walker…Scott Lodding…Keaton Swane…Phillip Schroeder

From my vantage point group 2 & 3 Q/H’s without drama, just good racing.

“C” Main Top 5:

Josh Tatman (advanced to “B” Main)

Johnny Pegna

Josh Sarchet

Kyle Tatman

Krystal Wright

As you can see a win was not in the cards for Lattanzi and with another deserved Black Flag thrown in his direction put an end to his expected return to the “A” Main, by way of winning the “C” Main then winning the “B” Main. Overall finish for the night was 8th in the “C” Main and 29th for the night. Scored a whopping 14 points out of a possible 57!

I can only explain it this way. The real Kandyman was abducted by aliens right before the racing and this novice driver with little patience was substituted. Entertaining to some but a major disappointment to most including Lattanzi who may have to change his nickname from “Kandyman” to Apollo “G”. Sorry was as plentiful as the candy and were handed out to all involved with the promise of the real Steve Lattanzi showing up for the final on Sat. March 24 and racing clean and without incident. Silver lining was he won the 50/50 raffle of $26.50 and three comp race cards but decided to donate the winnings to the overall prize pool drawing at the Final awards ceremony Sat. Comp cards went to Mike McClaran and Keith Sears.

“B” Main Top 5:

Keaton Swane (advanced to “A” Main)

Phillip Schroeder

Rob Hartz

Joe Landram

Brian Landry

Now the Main that pays the most points and the two way battle for the top is between Tony Rolfson and Chaz Baca Jr.

Rolfson started from pole but Baca is not about to let Tony get away.

Nose to tail racing until Baca finds a way around Tony with a clean pass and manages to put some air between them. Baca scores victory #5 out of 8 races.

“A” Main Top 5:

Chaz Baca Jr

Tony Rolfson

Ronald Phillips

George Sklyarevesky

Scott Lodding

Overall points going into 2012 Winter League Race #9 (The Final) …Top 10

Chaz Baca Jr…449

Tony Rolfson…438

Kyler Repella…395

Josh Walker…391

Steve Lattanzi…382

Mike McClaran…354

Cody Gutierrez…352

Scott Lodding…348

Keith Sears…299

Joe Landram…290

Once we factor in the 1 race drop post Final Main Race the top 10 order may see changes to the overall points positions.

Top 10 will be computed Sat.

Tony Rolfson Wins 2012 Winter League Race #6 @ Octane Raceway March 6,2012

Thirty Two indoor kart racers took to Track 2 c/c/w for the 6th race of 9 in the 2012 Winter league series at Octane Raceway. Once again the need for 3 groups kept everyone on their accelerator and off the brake as the top 3 in each group got to advance to the coveted “A” Main. Finishing 4th may or may not get you into the major points group. With eleven to start the “A” Main only the two faster of the three of the 4th place finishers get to compete in the “A” Main. If you were the slowest in time from the 4th place finishers in your Heat then you get to start from Pole position in the “B” Main. The bonus is if you win the “B” Main you advance to the “A” Main and race another 40/50 lapper and try to make your way to the front to score max points. Easier said than done! Stamina can be an issue, you start from the rear and in a kart that’s not up to temp. To date not one “B” Main advance candidate has been a top 3 finisher in the “A” Main. Reason? With racers like Chaz Baca Jr, Tony Rolfson, Austin Kipp, Kyler Repella, Mike Davila, Keith Sears, Josh Sarchet, Josh Walker, Josh Lambeth, Mike McClaran, Jason Burstein, Steve Lattanzi and many more, that’s why! Many have tried and come up just a bit short. A very regular racer that has won more than his share of “B” Mains is Scott Lodding. He somehow just misses the “A” Main cut but is always right there winning the “B” and having another shot at more points. Hmmmm, I’m beginning to think this is Scott’s way of extra track time for the same entry fee. Nice way to pile on the laps in one night of league racing.

Let’s now get to the meat and potatoes of why you are reading this engaging and riveting race wrap up report.

We start with the 5 lap Qualifier into the 25 lap Heat.

Group 1 Q/H Top 5:

Steve Lattanzi…Josh Sarchet…Mike McClaran…Keith Sears…Rob Hartz.

Group 2 Q/H Top 5:

Tony Rolfson…Jason Burstein…Cody Gutierrez…Keaton Swane…Josh Walker.

Group 3 Q/H top 5:

Chaz Baca Jr…Kyler Repella…Austin Kipp…Scott Lodding…Charles Crowe.

“C” Main races first and with and redraw for karts we get to witness how fast a driver will be able to adapt to his second steed of the night.

Winner will advance to “B” Main.

“C” Main Top 5:

Don Angel (advances to “B” Main)

Nick Evans

Brian Landry

Krystal Wright

Kyle McGrath

“B” Main Top 5:

Scott Lodding (advances to “A” Main)

Keith Sears

Charles Crowe

Josh Walker

Rob Hartz

“A” Main Top 5:

Tony Rolfson

Chaz Baca Jr

Kyler Repella

Austin Kipp

Jason Burstein

About time a different name besides Baca took the win overall. Even though they stayed glued together for most of the 40 lap race, Rolfsons error free driving style kept him in the lead and out of trouble. Congratulations Tony!

And where was Steve Lattanzi who started this race from P3? Well on lap 16 the freight train led by Kyler Repella came roaring by with Kipp/Burstein/Sarchet and Gutierrez in tow to send innocent bystander Lattanzi to 8th. Let me make this very clear, the pass by all involved was clean x 5. Lattanzi managed to claw his way back to sixth 4 laps later but lose it again and finished a very disappointing 8th for the night.

Top 10 in Overall Points going into Race #7 of 9.

Chaz Baca Jr…335

Tony Rolfson…326

Steve Lattanzi…306

Kyler Repella…293

Josh Walker…288

Mike McClaran…264

Cody Gutierrez…260

Scott Lodding…250

Josh Sarchet…248

Austin Kipp…211

As we all get closer to the end of the 2012 Winter League series at Octane Raceway and the points race stays tight between the top two players Tony Rolfson & Chaz Baca Jr all it will take is one misstep by either one to fall by the wayside and not lay claim to the FREE entry into the 2012 Grand Nationals sponsored by CalSpeed Karting Center. Let’s not forget that there is one race drop at series end which may or not change the final results. May the best indoor kart racer of Octane Raceway win!

2012 Winter League Race #7 Octane Raceway March 13,2012

Tuesday March 13th had 27 indoor kart racers come together on Track 1 c/c/w for a night of fast and fun times here at Octane Raceway for race #7 of 9 in the 2012 Winter league series. Three groups of nine racers each in the 5 lap Qualifier/ 30 lap Heat with top 3 going to the 50 lap “A” Main, middle 3 going to “B” Main and bottom 3 going to “C” Main. Win the “C” Main and move into the “B” Main. Win the “B” Main and race your way thru the “A” Main.

Fifty laps back to back of racing on a track that see’s mid 21 second lap times can be quite a workout for even the most versatile and in shape indoor kart racer. Stamina will be the key to making that work. Proper hydration will also come into play for this.

First up is the 5 lap Qualifier into the 30 Lap Heat.

Group 1 Q/H Top 5:

Chaz Baca Jr…Jason Burstein…Kyler Repella…Cody Gutierrez…Keaton Swane.

Group 2 Q/H Top 5:

Tony Rolfson…Josh Walker…Keith Sears…Scott Lodding…Chris Wynne.

Group 3 Q/H Top 5:

Steve Lattanzi…Johnny Pegna…Mike McClaran…Joe Landram…George Sklyarevesky.

Honorable mention goes out to Mr Mechanic Race Suit, Johnny Pegna, who has rocketed his way past many other long time racers with sheer determination and what seems like an unlimited budget to practice almost daily. Seems like the old adage seat time=fast times are true in this case. It’s either that or he’s closing his eyes, screaming into his helmet and making risky passes to the inside, no holds barred. I’m hearing a mixture of both are the recipe for his new found success.

A, late in the race, battle for position was overturned in group 3 between Krystal Wright and newcomer Adam Baker. Baker made a give back the position move on Wright and so he was moved from P8 to P9 at the conclusion of Group 3 Q/H.

Redraw for karts and we are now set for the 50 lap Mains.

Chaz Baca Jr owns best lap time of 21.379 at the conclusion of the Q/H’s.

“C” Main Top 5:

Don Angel (advances to “B” Main)

Greg Gillum

Zaron Welch

Blake Leuty

Josh Tatman

After a very long spell (2004/2005) Zaron Welch returns to try his hand at league racing once again. He had at one time been one of the week in week out top league racers until he vanished into thin air until March 13. We welcome Zaron back and he remarked how much better the competition had become as well as younger. He promised to step into the league racing on a more than every 6 years regularity. Good to have you back. Even after all that time he only ended up 6 tenths of a second off the faster top times of the “A” Main leaders. 21.933 not a bad way to return.

“B” Main Top 5:

Scott Lodding (advances to “A” Main)

Cody Gutierrez

Chris Wynne

Joe Landram

Charles Crowe

Scott Lodding is the #1 King of Advancement to the next Main. In most cases he is also able to move up a spot or two to capture some of the coveted “A” Main points. He currently resides in 8th Place in overall league points and when all said and done I expect him to be in the top 5. He never gives up!

With the best of the best now suited up, weighted and belted in we now have the “A” Main ready to go. Warm up lap complete and the green flag drops and into the first turn there is already some action to the inside which manages to separate the top three of Baca, Rolfson and Lattanzi from the rest of the pack. Boy, that was a crazy early move by??? You can’t win a 50 lap race in the first turn. So with now a large gap between 1/2/3 and the rest of the field the top three slowly but surely pull away. Baca then finds his groove and never looks back. If he had done so he would have seen a 50 lap race bumper to bumper between Lattanzi & Rolfson with Rolfson successfully holding off Lattanzi to take 2nd Place even though Lattanzi set faster lap times. By making no contact between them, they didn’t allow the 4th place runner to gain much ground. Kyler Repella was that racer who broke away from the pack and made every effort to close the gap. Top 5 weigh outs complete and podium pics logged it was another exciting finish with You-Know-Who Baca standing on the top step of the winners podium. Tuesday March 20th we reset the action and most of us hope for better results. It’s crunch time with only two races left to walk away with the top prize of a Free entry into the Grand Nationals sponsored by CalSpeed Karting Center , Fontana, CA. Three days of outdoor Sport Karting against the best indoor/outdoor karters there is.

“A” Main Top 5 Results:

Chaz Baca Jr

Tony Rolfson

Steve Lattanzi

Kyler Repella

Josh Walker

Chaz Baca Jr holds onto fast lap time for the night with a 21.375. Very consistent compared to his times in a different kart in his Q/H. (21.379)

Top 10 in Overall Points going into Race # 8 on Tuesday March 20, 2012.

Chaz Baca Jr…392

Tony Rolfson…382

Steve Lattanzi…361

Kyler Repella…345

Josh Walker…340

Mike McClaran…310

Cody Gutierrez…304

Scott Lodding…297

Keith Sears…253

Joe Landram…251

We will be recalculating the score after the Final race held on Sat. March 24th,  with the lowest league score dropped from each racers total points.

2012 Octane Raceway Winter League Race #5 results from Feb. 28, 2012

Thirty three racers signed up to compete on Track 2 c/w, but one fell victim to a headache of epic proportions and failed to make the trip from Tucson. Between you and me and that fly on the wall, his, new to this kart league racing, brother has been gaining ground on this K&N NASCAR series driver and the ego has been threatened. I can only imagine that the 125 mile ride to Phoenix has been much different than the ride back to Tucson post league night. I do like both of these kart racers under development but wonder if that troublemaker by the name of Sibling Rivalry comes along for the ride.

Another, league regular, Keith Sears had to bail out last minute due to a last minute work assignment. I hear he’s working as a male escort or Gigolo and when his “Clients” call he’s off and running. He caters to a select clientele and for whatever the reason always has a briefcase filled with Denture adhesive and hearing aid batteries. I think he woos the older more mature ladies. He calls then the “Centurions’”. I hear they are big tippers!

Up first is the 5 lap Qualifiers into the 25 lap Heats. Three groups.

Group 1 Top 5:

Tony Rolfson…Kyler Repella…Scott Lodding…Chris Wynne…Charles Crowe

Group 2 Top 5:

Chaz Baca Jr…Josh Walker…Cody Gutierrez…Don Angel…Ronald Jones

Group 3 Top 5:

Steve Lattanzi…Josh Sarchet…Keaton Swane…Johnny Pegna…Mike McClaran

Josh Sarchet was glued to the rear bumper of Steve Lattanzi for 24 of the 25 laps but decided to make a move on the last right hand turn to the Checkered Flag but in trying to fit a 4’ wide kart into a less than 1’ space bounced Lattanzi out of the way and into the barriers. No way Jose’ cried the race officials, the spectators and most of all, leader going in and now behind Sarchet across the line, Lattanzi. It was fixed post race to everyone’s satisfaction including Sarchet who admitted fault to causing the incident. Thanks Josh it was the right thing to do especially with sooooooooooooooooo ,many eyeballs tuned. Too many witnesses and not enough hush money to go around.

Next up are the 3 Mains with the “C” Main on Track first.

40 laps and winner goes to the tail end of the “B” Main. Think dehydrated exhaustion.

“C” Main Top 5:

Ryan Prince(advances to the “B” Main)

Nick Evans

Frank Beck

Krystal Wright

Greg Gillum

“B” Main Top 5:

Logan Swane(advances to “A” Main)

Ronald Jones

Mike McClaran

Chris Wynne

Charles Crowe

“A” Main Top 5:

Chaz Baca Jr (podium)

Steve Lattanzi (podium)

Tony Rolfson (podium)

Josh Sarchet

Kyler Repella

With another win by Chaz Baca Jr in his Heat and the Main he scores max points of 57 and adds to his point spread between himself, Tony Rolfson and Steve Lattanzi. Baca grows closer to the Grand Nationals prize of FREE entry if he wins the 2012 Octane Raceway Winter League Series. BIG THANKS to CalSpeed Karting Center for that outstanding prize.

One off race for Baca could flip flop the points battle and we have 4 races left to see if that happens and breaks his ongoing winning streak of 5 league series in a row. May have to throw an extra 50# of weight his way to do it! We will be factoring in one race drop which should bring the points closer.

Top 10 in Points after 5 races/with points drop factored in for Top 5

Chaz Baca Jr…279/227

Tony Rolfson…269/218

Steve Lattanzi…256/214

Josh Walker…248/205

Kyler Repella…239/201

Mike McClaran…217

Cody Gutierrez…211

Scott Lodding…206

Josh Sarchet…197

Joe Landram…177

So ends another exciting chapter in the quest for the top spot on the Octane Raceway winner’s podium. See you all next week.
