Another Sport league Win for Erik McCorvey and Chaz Baca Jr adds to his Win pile in the Pro League

A total of 30 racers joined in on race #8 of the 10 scheduled for the 2012 Fall Sport/Pro league racing series Tuesday Nov. 20.

Racing on Track 1 c/c/w for the qualifiers into the heats and racing c/w for the mains keeps everybody tuned in to how a simple direction change can effect karts and driving style.

Same night with 2 track directions and 2 different karts. The best at this are the drivers that can quickly become one with kart and direction.

In the Sport league we saw evidence of that with overall points leader Chaz Baca Sr struggle in the qualifier/heat and have to start from pole in the Sport “B” Main. He did win the “B” and go on to place 5th  for the night and still maintain his overall points lead going into Race #9.  Group 1 Q/Heat was won by Ariel Rubio with Scott Swayzee less than .5 second off his rear bumper and Craig Moore bringing it home in 3rd. Scott Swayzee had taken pole for the heat but could not keep Rubio at bay late in the race. Cele Aragon took pole for the group 2 heat but Erik McCorvey put together fast laps, got by, but once again a close finish that had 2nd place less than .5 second away. Frank Dusanek held onto 3rd in that heat.

“B” Main races without incident but the “A” Main had John Moldt and Austin Corr making contact with Moldt skidding out of control and leaving fresh rubber marks on the track. Corr was black flagged with a stop and go penalty. Meanwhile up front, Erik McCorvey takes down another win over Ariel Rubio and Scott Swayzee finally ends up on the podium with a good run to take 3rd overall for the night.

The Sport league continues to be a very competitive class and with 2 races left, the points battle is heating up.

Sport League Finish Order:

Erik McCorvey…Ariel Rubio…Scott Swayzee…Cele Aragon…Chaz Baca Sr…Frank Dusanek…Craig Moore…John Moldt…Austin Corr…Matt Veretto…Scott Reece…Greg Gillum…Mathew Bryant…Dawn Sharp…Jimmy Jo Jannetto…Apo Tsolakis…Ben Conner.

Pro league racers take to the track and take over where the Sport league left off. Best of the week times reflect the fast times of the Sport leaguers but will soon be replaced by the fast times of the Pro leaguers.

Best time, in the Sport class, put down by Erik McCorvey…22.192. By the end of the Pro league Chaz Baca Jr put down a 21.836 and three others also dipped down into the 21 second per lap arena. Remarkably all those fast times were set in the Heats.

Kyler Repella was one of them and his time, (21.858) was good enough to take pole position for the Pro league “A” Main. What? No Baca on pole? Someone get me some smelling salts!

Cody Gutierrez starts from pole position in the Pro “B” Main, wins it handily when Keith Sears is first passed by Jason Burstein, Sears gets the position back and then is T-boned  by Burstein. Burstein was black flagged and decided to park it for the night. Keith had good reason to be upset as he was running 2nd at the time of contact and finished 5th in the “B” Main or 11th overall for the night. Gutierrez now gets to start from the back of the pack in the Pro league “A” Main. Soon after the start of the race it becomes 2 races. A group of 3 led by Kyler Repella and a group of 4 led by Chris Wynne. Repella loses the spot to Josh Lambeth who loses the spot to Chaz Baca Jr. The 2nd race within a race was Wynne/Lattanzi/Crowe/Gutierrez and they ran bumper to bumper lap after lap until Lattanzi made a move on Wynne and that gave Gutierrez the opportunity to skate on by both and without a wave of thanks.

Charles Crowe now all over the bumper of Lattanzi and with about 15 laps to go Lattanzi starts bouncing thru the turns like an over inflated basketball.

Crowe finally gets by “the bouncer” and starts to reel in Wynne but runs out of laps.

Josh Lambeth now has his second podium finish in two weeks and is grinning like a Cheshire Cat.

Pro League Finish Order:

Chaz Baca Jr…Josh Lambeth…Kyler Repella…Cody Gutierrez…Chris Wynne…Charles Crowe…Steve Lattanzi…Mike McClaran…Brian Landry…Scott Lodding…Keith Sears…Don Angel…Jason Burstein.

Congratulations to Sport league Race #8 Winner Erik McCorvey and Pro League Race #8 Winner Chaz Baca Jr. Rumor has it that Baca Jr may not make the Pro league Final on Sunday Dec. 2 due to another racing commitment. Does he have enough wins piled up to win his 9th league series in a row without the Final or will he lose it to Kyler Repella. Let’s see what happens next Tuesday, Nov. 27, when we all get together again on Track 2 for the best Sport/Pro league racing in the country.

Chaz Baca Jr Wins Race #9 (Final) and adds another Championship to his resume

The 2012 AZIKC monthly race series concluded on Sunday Nov. 18. A series that saw as many as 23 racers competing on the combined GP Track layout c/w or c/c/w. The skill level of all the racers just got better as the series went on which turned into a close points battle from second on down.

Chaz Baca Jr picked up win #6 out of 9 and during the course of the series, never finished lower than 3rd. That kind of performance is hard to overcome although Kyler Repella gave it his best shot every month. A tight points race between Kyler Repella and Team Racin Neustein (Jason Burstein/Bobby Neuman) came right down to the last race. Repella qualified 5th but  kept his cool and focus which resulted in a 2nd place finish in race #9 and secured his 2nd Place finish overall. Racin Neustein qualified 2nd but could only muster up a 5th place finish to end the series 3rd overall. Two points was the difference between 2nd & 3rd place after the one race drop. Team Titanium (Keith Sears/Steve Lattanzi) entered the final race in 3rd place, qualified 3rd for the final race and finished 3rd, but once the one race drop was factored in dropped to 4th overall. Six points was the difference between hoisting a trophy overhead or going home empty handed. Charles Crowe had a great final race with a 4th place qualifying run and a 4th place finish. Overall he finished 6th  even though he missed two races during the year. Mike McClaran also missed two races and finished 7th overall. 8th place overall went to the “never give up” team of Hunter Killer, (Bill Hunter/John Pappagallo)

Greg Gillum who travels 2 hours each way for all the races finished just out of the top 10 but none the less is always there and one of Octane Raceways most loyal regular racers.

Chris Wynne is also one great racer who can be a serious threat to anybody’s points. He finished 10th overall.l Kart draw has more often than not been his nemesis but Chris keeps coming back and is fast behind the wheel in spite of it.

Defending 4 time AZIKC Champion, Tony Rolfson missed Race #1, #8 and #9 but had scored enough points to give him a 5th place overall finish. Who knows what the outcome may have been should Tony been able to compete in every race. He was one of a handful that could give Chaz Baca Jr a run for his money.

Want express a BIG thanks to all the different racers who took the time and resources to compete in the 2012 AZIKC series. We had 55 racers over the course of the series join us for one race or all nine.

Stepping into the final race we had Sport League regulars Chaz Baca Sr and Scott Reece. Two brothers who decided to compete for the first time, Matt & Mark Veretto and had a great time competing against the best. Ronald Jones aka “Mr Late” was there and on time which is a first.

Congratulations to Chaz Baca Jr who has now extended his Champions title to include the 2012 AZIKC.

Overall Finish Order of the 2012 AZIKC: (Top 11)

Chaz Baca Jr…248

Kyler Repella…219

Racin Neustein (Jason Burstein/Bobby Neuman)…217

Team Titanium (Keith Sears/Steve Lattanzi)…211

Winning night for the Baca Family in Sport & Pro league race #7

Every Tuesday night the place to be is Octane Raceway for the biggest and best indoor kart racing leagues in the valley and Tuesday Nov. 13 was no exception. The driving skills of 33 racers was put to the test and league race #7 of 10 on Track 2 is officially in the books.

With 20 racers competing in the Sport league, 2 groups of 10 were set in motion and by 8pm we had our top 3 standing atop the podium. Overall Sport League points leader Chaz Baca Sr took top honors with Erik McCorvey taking 2nd and Robert Giorgio taking the 3rd place podium step. Honorable mention goes out to Ariel Rubio who started the race from pole and for the next 30 laps it was a four way race for the win.

Cele Aragon, who won the Sport “B” Main to earn the right to start from the back of the Sport “A” Main ended up a very respectable 6th for the night. A black flag for contact in his Heat had Aragon wanting to redeem his reputation, in the Main, as a clean competitor and I think he proved it, twice.

Sport League

“A” Main Finish order:

Chaz Baca Sr…Erik McCorvey…Robert Giorgio…Ariel Rubio…Frank Dusanek…Cele Aragon…Craig Moore…Austin Corr…John Moldt…Chris Webb…Rob Giorgio.

Erik McCorvey sets fast lap time with a 28.124

“B” Main Finish Order:

Cele Aragon…Scott Reece…Greg Gillum…Jimmy Joe Jannetto…Dawn Sharp…Michael Bryant…Ben Conner…Dwayne Pihulak…Matthew Bryant…Scott Swayzee.

Overall season points sheets for both the Sport and Pro leagues can be found on the competition table near the Trackside Grill.

Pro League

Thirteen Pro league racers signed up so they raced as one group. Top three qualifiers saw Chaz Baca Jr on pole for the Heat, with Kyler Repella and Josh Lambeth in hot pursuit. Lap times in the Heat ranged from 28.112 to 28.842.

Finish order for the Heat & starting order for the Main:

Chaz Baca Jr…Kyler Repella…Josh Lambeth…Cody Gutierrez…Chris Wynne…Jason Burstein…Scott Lodding…Steve Lattanzi…Keith Sears…Brian Landry…Charles Crowe…Mike McClaran…Blake Leuty.

The 40 lap Main goes green and Baca Jr starts pulling away from Repella, Lambeth, Gutierrez and Wynne. Meanwhile, starting from back in 6th place is Burstein, with a head of steam and within short order is making up ground as the karts ahead stack up behind Repella. One by one they pick off Repella. Once Chris Wynne and Josh Lambeth get by Repella they decide it’s time to pass each other and lo and behold as they do that, Burstein grabs an opportunity to pass both, and goes from 4th to 2nd in the blink of an eye.

Where was Cody Gutierrez? He made contact with the wall hard halfway into the race and now was trying to maneuver an ill handling kart and coming to grips with what seemed to be a lone mistake.

Chaz Baca Jr puts another win in the max points box and continues his dominance on his way to a 9th league Championship with 3 races remaining.

Even though Baca Jr was top qualifier, won the Heat and the Main it was Chris Wynne who took fast time honors with a lap time of 27.987!

Finish Order Main:

Chaz Baca Jr…Jason Burstein…Josh Lambeth…Chris Wynne…Kyler Repella…Steve Lattanzi…Scott Lodding…Mike McClaran…Keith Sears…Brian Landry…Charles Crowe…Blake Leuty…Cody Gutierrez.
