Chaz Baca Jr Wins Race #1, Jason Burstein has Overall Points Lead in Pro League

There can only be one word to describe what happened at Octane Raceway, Tuesday from 6pm to 10pm. Awesome!!! That so happened to be the night that the Fall Sport/Pro leagues opened up their 10 race series. Sport leaguers showed up in mass for their 5:45pm check in and extra security was standing by in case all 28 spots sold out and the crowd became shall I say unruly. Never happened and the RED alert was downgraded to green. 24 Sport league racers and 18 Pro league racers came together for a night of fast and furious fun. League racer caps are at 28 racers each so we have room for you and your friends to join us. We do split the leagues into 2 groups of 14 each and by the time the Mains roll around the fields are pretty evenly matched.

Nearly 100% of the Pro league racers are carried over from the Spring or Summer league which ended Sat Sept 9^th with Chaz Baca Jr taking down his 8^th League Championship in a row. What do we have to do to slow this young “Master of Speed”? Flatten a tire, put him in a Jr kart, blindfold him? I need answers people and I need them now before he…oh well, you know the rest.

Blake Leuty was about the only “New” guy even though he has raced with us before and due to work schedules could not make the 5:45pm check in time for the Sport league. Good thing because he did so well Tuesday with the Pro league that I probably would have asked him to step up into the Pro league.

Having both leagues on the same night has huge benefits as the racers from both can intermingle and learn from each other. A mutual sharing of how to be fast and how to get faster. I myself was able to get info from the driver coming out of the same kart I was in for the Main and I shaved about .5 seconds off his best time based on the info provided by the less than happy with the kart driver. Thank you SL who just so happens to have the same initials as me.

Eighteen racers joined race #1 of 10 in the Pro league.

Group 1 Qualifier/Heat had Kyler Repella take the win over Tony Rolfson and Chaz Baca Jr.

Group 2 Qualifier/Heat had Jason Burstein take the win over Steve Lattanzi and Josh Sarchet who was closing fast but ran out of laps.

Reset the fields and draw new karts for the “A” & “B” Mains. We see Chris Wynne on pole for the “B” Main. Scott Lodding starting second with Cody Gutierrez in P3.

Right from the green flag drop Scott Lodding is lagging and Chris Wynne pulling away. The rest of the field is nipping at the rear bumper of Lodding who seems to be struggling with left turn issues and one by one then in mass the field gets by Lodding to drop him from 2^nd starting position to 9^th. Quite unusual for such a talented driver such as Lodding.

Chris Wynne takes the win and advances into the “A” Main. Scott Lodding falls to 1 lap down and .5 seconds off pace to the leader. One very happy racer and one very unhappy racer. I’ll let you guess who’s what!

Now we move onto the “A” Main where we have Kyler on pole, Jason Burstein P2 and Tony Rolfson starting 3^rd. Where’s Waldo…I mean Chaz Baca Jr?

Due to a 3^rd place finish in his Q/Ht he gets to start from 6^th, but understand this the only threat of Baca Jr not winning is to have him in a different race.

We go green and on the very first lap and at the back left hander Tony Rolfson makes an inside passing move on Burstein, who kindly gives Rolfson enough room to hit Repella and send him nose first into the barrier and basically out of contention for the win. Tony incurs a Black Flag drive thru penalty which also ends his quest of fame and fortune in race #1. My GoPro recorded the not well thought out move and luckily for this and many other drivers made the move around and thru the bottleneck. Meanwhile now Lattanzi is turning decent laps and has got the no left turn kart figured out to extract the best it can deliver until the Baca Jr and Sarchet party arrive to make my stay in 2^nd place a short one. Baca Jr is now chasing Burstein and Sarchet is hanging onto his bumper but slowly but surely Baca pulls away and goes after Burstein for the win from 6^th place. Sarchet and Lattanzi stayed close and by race end had Burstein in their sights but ran out of laps. From what I hear there was a bit of a conga line backed up behind Josh Lambeth. Chris Wynne did not move thru the field as he intended but still scores “A” Main points for 10 place. He ran a total of 100 laps in the Mains on Track 1 which would have most of us begging for the Checkered Flag. We now call him “Ironman”.

Team DeathProof, Chaz Baca Jr & Kyler Repella Win the 3 Hour Team Endurance Race on Sunday Oct. 7, 2012

Eleven teams competed on Sunday Oct. 7 from 9am to 12 noon. It was one of the ways to celebrate the 9 years Octane Raceway formerly F1 Race Factory has been open to race karts indoors and what better way to do it than by holding an Endurance race.

 

First off I want to congratulate the 2012 Octane Raceway 3 Hour Team Endurance Champions, Chaz Baca Jr & Kyler Repella of Team DeathProof. They once again proved to be an unbeatable combination of driving skill and timeline strategy. Even though they came close to the timeline window of 30 minutes between drivers time they managed to stay within the parameters by 7 minutes to take the win. 2^nd Place honors went to Mike McClaran & Keith Sears of Team Road Toad. Unusual team name but a racing game plan that saw no mistakes and a time difference between drivers of only 4 minutes.

Now for the team that took 3^rd Place. Team CRG/USA Motul  fielded a three man team of Kyle Hathcox, Jesus Torres & Peter Liwanag. They struggled midway thru with a timeline strategy that threatened to derail their plan to win but with a quick change and an extra pit stop they managed to race their way back into 3^rd and end up with a perfect 60/60/60 driver timeline between them. Great comeback from the edge of miscalculation. These three guys are just some of the awesome track crew that does a great job at Octane Raceway day in and day out with helping customers and flagging the arrive & drive races and with all the competition races.

A few missteps by some of the teams with most of the penalties coming from the stop zone prior to the driver change/stint area. I saw only one on track Black Flag thrown and the surprise was it was one of the very regular league racers making contact with another very regular league racer. May have to change that white race suit to black. 

Good clean racing was to be had on this bright and sunny Sunday and I’m sure once the adrenaline dropped back to normal, midday relaxation turned to midday naps. Who knew having that much fun could be so mentally & physically taxing.

There is one person who deserves the biggest thanks. Week after week and on Sunday, James Gibbins steps up and without his help the leagues/AZIKC/3 Hour Enduro, etc, would not happen or be less than great. THANK YOU James!! You are awesome as always and I hope your soccer team won on Sunday.

 

Even though not everyone went home with 1^st/2^nd/3^rd Place hardware and bragging rights they must admit it was a good use of three or more hours on a Sunday morning with like minded new and old indoor kart racing friends. Without racers like you it’s just a big building with some karts in it.

Opening Round Of Fall Sport League @ Octane Raceway Won by Chaz Baca Sr

Where in the Valley of the Sun do the best indoor kart racers go? Why they go to Octane Raceway on Tuesday nights now that the 2012 Fall Racing leagues is back and better than ever. Sport/Pro leagues on the same night and on the same track. Sport league is open to all new to racing and geared toward the intermediate racer. Track 1 was used on Tuesday 10/2. Twenty four Sport League racers checked in by 5:45pm, did a short driver meeting to pull the first of two karts to used by the racers. Cannot get the same kart twice in the same night. Racer cap for each league is 28. Two groups of up to 14 in each league.

 

The 5 lap Qualifier into the 25 lap Heat, c/w.

 

Group 1: Sport

1^st Place: Chaz Baca Sr, Robert Giorgio taking 2^nd and John Moldt securing 3^rd.

Group 2: Sport

Erik McCorvey took down the win, Craig Moore 2^nd and Rob Giorgio in 3^rd.

Rob Giorgio started from pole but got forced wide in turn one trying to get around lapped traffic. Cost him the win, but ended up with a very respectable 3^rd.

Looks like the Giorgio’s are going to go head to head in the “A” Main!

 

Reset the fields with top 6 from each group moving into the 40 lap “A” Main and the bottom 6 moving into the 40 lap “B” Main.

Short driver meeting to pull the 2^nd kart of the night.

“B” Main races first and the winner of the ”B” Main gets to race in the “A” Main from last place, if the needed energy and stamina are up to speed.

c/c/w is the race direction for the Mains.

 

“B” Main winner turns out to be “Stamina King”, Michael Bryant who had raced in the Summer mixed league and now has his sights set on finishing top 3 in the very competitive Fall Sport league.

Now we race the “A” Main and starting from the Pole position is Chaz Baca Sr who has become well known for another person by the same name but is Jr to his Sr. Chaz Baca Jr, racing in the Pro league, is the current Octane Raceway League Champion 8 times running and in a row. Sr is hoping to copy son and have his extensive former outdoor dirt track racecar experience transfer into a  Fall Sport League Championship. His quest so far has him in the lead in points but we are still very early in the season to declare anybody, “Champion”.

Baca Sr put some distance between him and the rest of the field early and by race end had about a 4 second lead over 2^nd place finisher Robert Giorgio. Erik McCorvey rounded out the top 3 podium picture taken at race conclusion. Congratulations to Chaz Baca Sr for taking pole in the Heat, winning his Heat then winning from pole and setting fast time of the week in the “A” Main. Next Sport league race I say we have him race a Jr kart!

By 8pm or so we have the Sport league top 3 photographed standing atop the Octane Raceway podium.  The “New” Sport league is officially back in action. The 24 racers had whipped out their cash or credit cards to purchase one of the coveted spots for the opening round of the 10 race series. You want the most laps for the money this is the place to be. You want a friendly but competitive race series this is the place to be. You want to make new friends and have a great time for 2 or more hours, this is the place to be. $40.00 is the entry cost for a spot on the Sport league racing roster and if you pre pay for the 10 race season you will only pay $35.00 per race or $350.00. Pre paying will also guarantee your spot for the 1/2 mile GP track Final on Sat. Dec. 1^st. Top 3 in series points with 1 race drop will be handed prizes worth millions and huge solid Gold trophies.

All competitive racing done at Octane Raceway is weight equalized to 200#. Weigh out allowance is 198#. Over 200# ? make friends with a liposuction doctor!
