Chaz Baca Jr Wins Race #1, Jason Burstein has Overall Points Lead in Pro League

There can only be one word to describe what happened at Octane Raceway, Tuesday from 6pm to 10pm. Awesome!!! That so happened to be the night that the Fall Sport/Pro leagues opened up their 10 race series. Sport leaguers showed up in mass for their 5:45pm check in and extra security was standing by in case all 28 spots sold out and the crowd became shall I say unruly. Never happened and the RED alert was downgraded to green. 24 Sport league racers and 18 Pro league racers came together for a night of fast and furious fun. League racer caps are at 28 racers each so we have room for you and your friends to join us. We do split the leagues into 2 groups of 14 each and by the time the Mains roll around the fields are pretty evenly matched.

Nearly 100% of the Pro league racers are carried over from the Spring or Summer league which ended Sat Sept 9th with Chaz Baca Jr taking down his 8th League Championship in a row. What do we have to do to slow this young “Master of Speed”? Flatten a tire, put him in a Jr kart, blindfold him? I need answers people and I need them now before he…oh well, you know the rest.

Blake Leuty was about the only “New” guy even though he has raced with us before and due to work schedules could not make the 5:45pm check in time for the Sport league. Good thing because he did so well Tuesday with the Pro league that I probably would have asked him to step up into the Pro league.

Having both leagues on the same night has huge benefits as the racers from both can intermingle and learn from each other. A mutual sharing of how to be fast and how to get faster. I myself was able to get info from the driver coming out of the same kart I was in for the Main and I shaved about .5 seconds off his best time based on the info provided by the less than happy with the kart driver. Thank you SL who just so happens to have the same initials as me.

Eighteen racers joined race #1 of 10 in the Pro league.

Group 1 Qualifier/Heat had Kyler Repella take the win over Tony Rolfson and Chaz Baca Jr.

Group 2 Qualifier/Heat had Jason Burstein take the win over Steve Lattanzi and Josh Sarchet who was closing fast but ran out of laps.

Reset the fields and draw new karts for the “A” & “B” Mains. We see Chris Wynne on pole for the “B” Main. Scott Lodding starting second with Cody Gutierrez in P3.

Right from the green flag drop Scott Lodding is lagging and Chris Wynne pulling away. The rest of the field is nipping at the rear bumper of Lodding who seems to be struggling with left turn issues and one by one then in mass the field gets by Lodding to drop him from 2nd starting position to 9th. Quite unusual for such a talented driver such as Lodding.

Chris Wynne takes the win and advances into the “A” Main. Scott Lodding falls to 1 lap down and .5 seconds off pace to the leader. One very happy racer and one very unhappy racer. I’ll let you guess who’s what!

Finish Order of the “B” Main with Total points scored overall:

Chris Wynne (to “A” Main)…44

Cody Gutierrez…42

Philip Schroeder…40

Charles Crowe…38

Mike McClaran…38

Brian Landry…46

Ronald Jones…35

Krystal Wright…33

Scott Lodding…35

Now we move onto the “A” Main where we have Kyler on pole, Jason Burstein P2 and Tony Rolfson starting 3rd. Where’s Waldo…I mean Chaz Baca Jr?

Due to a 3rd place finish in his Q/Ht he gets to start from 6th, but understand this the only threat of Baca Jr not winning is to have him in a different race.

We go green and on the very first lap and at the back left hander Tony Rolfson makes an inside passing move on Burstein, who kindly gives Rolfson enough room to hit Repella and send him nose first into the barrier and basically out of contention for the win. Tony incurs a Black Flag drive thru penalty which also ends his quest of fame and fortune in race #1. My GoPro recorded the not well thought out move and luckily for this and many other drivers made the move around and thru the bottleneck. Meanwhile now Lattanzi is turning decent laps and has got the no left turn kart figured out to extract the best it can deliver until the Baca Jr and Sarchet party arrive to make my stay in 2nd place a short one. Baca Jr is now chasing Burstein and Sarchet is hanging onto his bumper but slowly but surely Baca pulls away and goes after Burstein for the win from 6th place. Sarchet and Lattanzi stayed close and by race end had Burstein in their sights but ran out of laps. From what I hear there was a bit of a conga line backed up behind Josh Lambeth. Chris Wynne did not move thru the field as he intended but still scores “A” Main points for 10 place. He ran a total of 100 laps in the Mains on Track 1 which would have most of us begging for the Checkered Flag. We now call him “Ironman”.

Finish Order for the “A” Main with total points scored overall:

Chaz Baca Jr…55

Jason Burstein…56

Josh Sarchet…53

Steve Lattanzi…53

Josh Lambeth…50

Kyler Repella…52

Tony Rolfson…50

Keith Sears…46

Blake Leuty…46

Chris Wynne…44

Team DeathProof, Chaz Baca Jr & Kyler Repella Win the 3 Hour Team Endurance Race on Sunday Oct. 7, 2012

Eleven teams competed on Sunday Oct. 7 from 9am to 12 noon. It was one of the ways to celebrate the 9 years Octane Raceway formerly F1 Race Factory has been open to race karts indoors and what better way to do it than by holding an Endurance race.

First off I want to congratulate the 2012 Octane Raceway 3 Hour Team Endurance Champions, Chaz Baca Jr & Kyler Repella of Team DeathProof. They once again proved to be an unbeatable combination of driving skill and timeline strategy. Even though they came close to the timeline window of 30 minutes between drivers time they managed to stay within the parameters by 7 minutes to take the win. 2nd Place honors went to Mike McClaran & Keith Sears of Team Road Toad. Unusual team name but a racing game plan that saw no mistakes and a time difference between drivers of only 4 minutes.

Now for the team that took 3rd Place. Team CRG/USA Motul  fielded a three man team of Kyle Hathcox, Jesus Torres & Peter Liwanag. They struggled midway thru with a timeline strategy that threatened to derail their plan to win but with a quick change and an extra pit stop they managed to race their way back into 3rd and end up with a perfect 60/60/60 driver timeline between them. Great comeback from the edge of miscalculation. These three guys are just some of the awesome track crew that does a great job at Octane Raceway day in and day out with helping customers and flagging the arrive & drive races and with all the competition races.

A few missteps by some of the teams with most of the penalties coming from the stop zone prior to the driver change/stint area. I saw only one on track Black Flag thrown and the surprise was it was one of the very regular league racers making contact with another very regular league racer. May have to change that white race suit to black.

Good clean racing was to be had on this bright and sunny Sunday and I’m sure once the adrenaline dropped back to normal, midday relaxation turned to midday naps. Who knew having that much fun could be so mentally & physically taxing.

Finish Order after 3 hours on the ½ Mile GP Track c/w & c/c/w.

1: Team DeathProof…Chaz Baca Jr/Kyler Repella

2: Team Road Toad…Mike McClaran/Keith Sears

3: Team CRG/USA Motul…Kyle Hathcox/Jesus Torres/Peter Liwanag

4: Team Expendables3…Chaz Baca Sr/Greg Gillum/Charles Crowe

5: Team Shake & Bake…Brent Yarnal/Todd McIlvane

6: Team Black & Gold…Chris Gatley/Eric Gatley

7: Team 11 Tenths…Lou Young/Dave Fiske/Mike Roberts

8: Team Just Drive…Jason Rossi/Jason Sutton/Phil Meyer

9: Team Rusty Nuts…Matt Forbes/Mike Tammen/Harley Miner

10: Team Duo Bombers…Brian Landry/Philip Schroeder (5th w/o time penalty)

Top 3 prize package included $50.00 certificates to RockAuto.com… For all the Parts your Car will ever Need.

Thank You RockAuto.com

Three sets of NASCAR tickets to the NASCAR race @ P.I.R. on Sunday Nov. 11th were also raffled off and were a surprise bonus to the racers who participated.

Thank You NASCAR/P.I.R./Octane.

On that note I do want to THANK each and every person that pitched in to help make the 3 Hour Team Endurance Race another successful event. People like Levi Pyse, Mitchell Jones, Robert Garcia, William Herr, Sal Licari, Chet Jones, Nick Meeker, Angel Lamanilao, Aryanne Poole, Crystal Arviso, and Bryanna McLean. Thank You all for coming in early on Sunday.

Thank You to Nicki Nobish for all your behind the scenes help with all my racing & teaching programs.

Thumbs up to JP Mullan who takes my monumental idea’s of racing, fine tunes it to fit and gets the word out on Social media. Thanks Scott for allowing the racing to continue and be the best it can be in the Best indoor kart racing facility in the country, Octane Raceway.

There is one person who deserves the biggest thanks. Week after week and on Sunday, James Gibbins steps up and without his help the leagues/AZIKC/3 Hour Enduro, etc, would not happen or be less than great. THANK YOU James!! You are awesome as always and I hope your soccer team won on Sunday.

Even though not everyone went home with 1st/2nd/3rd Place hardware and bragging rights they must admit it was a good use of three or more hours on a Sunday morning with like minded new and old indoor kart racing friends. Without racers like you it’s just a big building with some karts in it.

I do want to Thank all the drivers who took the time and resources to participate in the 2012 3 Hour Team Endurance Race @ Octane Raceway on Sunday October 7.

Opening Round Of Fall Sport League @ Octane Raceway Won by Chaz Baca Sr

Tuesday Oct. 2, 2012

Where in the Valley of the Sun do the best indoor kart racers go? Why they go to Octane Raceway on Tuesday nights now that the 2012 Fall Racing leagues is back and better than ever. Sport/Pro leagues on the same night and on the same track. Sport league is open to all new to racing and geared toward the intermediate racer. Track 1 was used on Tuesday 10/2. Twenty four Sport League racers checked in by 5:45pm, did a short driver meeting to pull the first of two karts to used by the racers. Cannot get the same kart twice in the same night. Racer cap for each league is 28. Two groups of up to 14 in each league.

The 5 lap Qualifier into the 25 lap Heat, c/w.

Group 1: Sport

1st Place: Chaz Baca Sr, Robert Giorgio taking 2nd and John Moldt securing 3rd.

Group 2: Sport

Erik McCorvey took down the win, Craig Moore 2nd and Rob Giorgio in 3rd.

Rob Giorgio started from pole but got forced wide in turn one trying to get around lapped traffic. Cost him the win, but ended up with a very respectable 3rd.

Looks like the Giorgio’s are going to go head to head in the “A” Main!

Reset the fields with top 6 from each group moving into the 40 lap “A” Main and the bottom 6 moving into the 40 lap “B” Main.

Short driver meeting to pull the 2nd kart of the night.

“B” Main races first and the winner of the ”B” Main gets to race in the “A” Main from last place, if the needed energy and stamina are up to speed.

c/c/w is the race direction for the Mains.

“B” Main winner turns out to be “Stamina King”, Michael Bryant who had raced in the Summer mixed league and now has his sights set on finishing top 3 in the very competitive Fall Sport league.

“B” Main Finish Order with Overall Points after Race #1  (40 laps c/c/w)

Michael Bryant…41 (advanced to “A” Main)

Will Shurtleff…37

Marcus Patterson…37

William Glisson…34

Scott Reece…34

Jaciel Beltran…30

Cory Butler…31

Austin Corr…29

Dawn Sharp…27

Ben Conner…25

Sergio Ochoa…24

Brian Corr…25

Top 5 weigh out with no penalties.

Now we race the “A” Main and starting from the Pole position is Chaz Baca Sr who has become well known for another person by the same name but is Jr to his Sr. Chaz Baca Jr, racing in the Pro league, is the current Octane Raceway League Champion 8 times running and in a row. Sr is hoping to copy son and have his extensive former outdoor dirt track racecar experience transfer into a  Fall Sport League Championship. His quest so far has him in the lead in points but we are still very early in the season to declare anybody, “Champion”.

Baca Sr put some distance between him and the rest of the field early and by race end had about a 4 second lead over 2nd place finisher Robert Giorgio. Erik McCorvey rounded out the top 3 podium picture taken at race conclusion. Congratulations to Chaz Baca Sr for taking pole in the Heat, winning his Heat then winning from pole and setting fast time of the week in the “A” Main. Next Sport league race I say we have him race a Jr kart!

“A” Main Finish Order with Overall Points after Race #1: (40 laps c/c/w)

Chaz Baca Sr…57

Robert Giorgio…55

Erik McCorvey…55

Rob Giorgio…52

Greg Gillum…49

Ariel Rubio…49

Craig Moore…50

John Moldt…48

Frank Dusanek…45

Scott Swayzee…45

Michael Bryant…41 (advanced from “B” Main)

Jimmy Joe Jannetto…41

Cele Aragon…40

Top 5 weigh out with no penalties.

By 8pm or so we have the Sport league top 3 photographed standing atop the Octane Raceway podium.  The “New” Sport league is officially back in action. The 24 racers had whipped out their cash or credit cards to purchase one of the coveted spots for the opening round of the 10 race series. You want the most laps for the money this is the place to be. You want a friendly but competitive race series this is the place to be. You want to make new friends and have a great time for 2 or more hours, this is the place to be. $40.00 is the entry cost for a spot on the Sport league racing roster and if you pre pay for the 10 race season you will only pay $35.00 per race or $350.00. Pre paying will also guarantee your spot for the 1/2 mile GP track Final on Sat. Dec. 1st. Top 3 in series points with 1 race drop will be handed prizes worth millions and huge solid Gold trophies.

All competitive racing done at Octane Raceway is weight equalized to 200#. Weigh out allowance is 198#. Over 200# ? make friends with a liposuction doctor!

Make plans to join us every Tuesday night for the best indoor kart racing there is. Next Sport or Pro league race is Tuesday Oct. 9. Sport check in by 5:45pm. Pro check in by 7:30pm.

Win #5 for Chaz Baca Jr, Racin Neustein(Jason Burstein) Takes 2nd & Chris Wynne comes home 3rd in Race #8 of 10 in the AZIKC

So race #8 of 10 in the monthly AZIKC race series was not a sell out but never the less a good race with a first timer to the podium stand. Chris Wynne has steadily ramped up his driving style to the point of capturing the last step on the podium aka 3rd Place in race #8 of 10.  Congratulations Chris! The heated on track battle between Chris Wynne and Kyler Repella was the one to watch and Repella even though placed his kart on pole to start the race,  indicated the kart changed personality during the course of the race and wasn’t the same kart that started the race. As you can see adapting to a changing kart has it’s merits. Wynne also posted a faster lap time of 51.885 over 2nd place finisher Team Rasin Neustein (Jason Burstein) but did not put enough of those fast laps together to make a run at second. Burstein ran the entire race solo as his teammate was mysteriously missing.

Chaz Baca Jr once again proves no matter what you throw his way he will get to the front. Baca qualified 3rd to start the 72 lap race on the ½ mile GP track layout. Maybe it was the c/c/w direction that worked against Repella or in favor of Baca Jr. Looked like pit strategy was a deciding factor. This win also comes on the heels of Chaz Baca Jr wrapping up a winning season on the PKRA outdoor kart track in the World Formula division.

Congratulations x 2 Chaz. Is there anything you drive you don’t win at?

There was one misstep by newcomer to the AZIKC series, Craig Moore, with a pit stop that had him leaving Track 1 pit by way of cutting thru the Track 2 pit. Not only was that a dangerously risky move but one that cost  Moore a Black Flag penalty that was compounded by the fact that he completely bypassed the timing line on his way out onto the track prior to being called in to serve the Black Flag penalty. By race end Craig was 3 laps down and promises to consume 2 bottles of 5 Hour Energy drink instead of 1, pre race, next time. I will be providing him with a Garmin GPS too!

Team Hunter Killer (Bill Hunter/John Pappagallo) were on the move with a late race charge that saw them in Hunter Killer mode and sneaking up on Team Titanium (Keith Sears/Steve Lattanzi) who were in a drive to stay alive and in 6th place after qualifying 9th. Bill Hunter was the predator and Steve Lattanzi was the target but “lucky Lattanz”i managed to stay ahead by the time the race came to a close and not a moment too soon. Lattanzi was never happier to see the white flag followed by the checkered and the race declared complete. Earlier Mike McClaran was glued to the rear bumper of Team Titanium but contact between McClaran and Team Hunter Killer took McClaran off the bumper of Team Titanium and was last seen falling back to finish 8th.

Post race the celebration continued with the most amazing cake I have ever seen in person and put together by Noelly for Charles Crowe who as of today is 44 years young. It was a shame to take a knife to all that hard work of 9 hours and a cake worthy of it’s own TV show on the Food Network. Everything on the cake was edible and not a scrap was left behind. That wasn’t a cake we just ate it was a masterpiece of artistry beyond anything that could have come out of my own kitchen. WOW! Thanks Noelly/Charles and family for sharing that with all of us. Visually stunning and mouth watering delicious. Happy Birthday, Charles!!!

Back to the race results:

Finish order from Race #8 with Overall in points/with total points w/o drop:

Chaz Baca Jr…1/248

Rasin Neustein…4/191

Chris Wynne…12/120 ( missed 3 races)

Kyler Repella…2/213

Charles Crowe…9/137 (missed 2 races)

Team Titanium…3/202

Team Hunter Killer…7/148

Mike McClaran…6/160

Team Green…8/147

Greg Gillum…11/124

Craig Moore…30/20 (only 1 race )

Tony Rolfson who was 5th in points overall decided to retire from the series after winning it 4 years.

Team F-Bomb has also sidelined their AZIKC run and were top 10.

The next AZIKC race will be held on Sunday Oct. 28th at 7pm on the ½ Mile GP Track c/w.

Make your plans to be here. It’s the most fun you can have with a helmet on.

Chaz Baca Jr Wraps up the 2012 Summer League with a Win and another Championship

The 2012 Summer league racing season came to a close on Sunday Sept 9 after 10 hard fought races to complete a season of some of the best racing within the 4 walls of Octane Raceway.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the league racers for their support and willingness to be flexible with regard to last minute changes.

Small changes to the racing format went extremely well and will be continued into the Fall Sport/Pro League season, which will now include the “new” Sport class for those entering  competitive kart racing for the first time or want to take the next step up from general public, arrive & drive racing. A few select racers from the Summer league will be permitted to enter the Sport league. The majority will compete in the Pro league and will not be permitted to step into the Sport league.

The Pro league will be reserved for the best of the best and for anyone that wants to learn from the best and take their indoor kart racing to a high level of performance. As a whole the entire league racing fraternity here at Octane has stepped up and collectively has reached new levels of fair and equal competition no matter what group you raced in. I witnessed exemplary actions of good sportsmanship and the never give up attitude not found in most other competitive environments today. Bravo to all especially Scott Swayzee who earned the Kandyman Award for his superior level of Good Sportsmanship and Never Give Up mindset. Thank You Scott and congratulations on winning the prestigious Kandyman Award Trophy. I’m sure you will find an appropriate place in your trophy room/man cave to display and show with pride. Enjoy the candy!

Congratulations to now 8 time league series “Champion”, Chaz Baca Jr. Not only has Chaz, who is only 15 years old, won more league races than anyone in the history of Octane but has won the 8 Championships in a row and stands undefeated since the 2010 Winter league series won by yours truly. Baca Jr won it by scoring maximum points (57) in 7 out of 10 races over Kyler Repella, who has made quite a name for himself and has become good friends with Chaz in the meantime. Some of the cleanest racing has happened between these two titans of the indoor karting world and let’s not forget about Austin Kipp, who has continued to display a talent at the wheel that comes from years of track laps at a weight that would slow most mortal racers down. Austin will take a season off then return right where he left off…at or near the top. This is in no way meant to diminish the talent pool that Octane has developed over the years but racers like Kipp never seem to lose their winning edge. For the rest of us weekly track practice is the norm to stay sharp and ready for the next season of competition. Tony Rolfson, & Josh Sarchet had they done the entire series would also have been in the points battle right to the end but work and family responsibilities took over for both of these local hotshoes.

The 2012 Summer league season was not without it’s drama from time to time with a record, two (2) red flags stopping races for on track incidents, one that had no less than six karts blocking Track 2.

Both Chaz and Kyler both found themselves, on different league nights, mired deep within the “B” Main only to win the “B” Main and proceed to pass most in the “A” Main to score top 5 points. More than one week saw Kyler atop the points charts and Baca as far back as 3rd without the 1 race points drop factored in. Baca now knows not to assume his weigh out weight to be the same on every scale. Lesson learned.

MIA for some of this season were racers like Josh Lambeth, Kyle Tatman, Paul Miller, Tage Evanson, Ronald Jones, Joe Landram, Craig Abraham, Carlos Carniero, Krystal Wright, Jason Griepentrog, Romano Cionni, Nick Evans, the Swane brothers, Chris Manwaring, George Sklyarevsky, etc.

Over the years many friendships have been started over this racin’ we like to do together and even if you don’t race stop by to see old friends and maybe make some new ones. Don’t forget your helmet just in case the pull of competition is too strong to resist!
